Fogelberg farewell

From the Peoria Journal Star …

“Fans from near and far gathered in what shade they could find from the glaring sun on Saturday afternoon to say goodbye to Peoria’s native son, Dan Fogelberg, a man whose music supplied the soundtrack to their lives.
“A memorial two years in the making, the three granite boulders bearing the etchings of Fogelberg’s lyrics were unveiled to family, friends and fans in Riverfront Park at a vista overlooking the Peoria River.
“Margaret Fogelberg, Dan’s mother who still resides in the East Bluff, said she finally felt closure after seeing the beautiful view and so many fans in attendance, close to 400. Fogelberg died from advanced prostate cancer on Dec. 16, 2007, at age 56.
“‘It’s amazing,’ she said in between hugs from fans who traveled from nearly every state to witness the memorial’s unveiling.”

Raised Awareness. Paid Tribute.

Last night, many gathered at the Globe News Center for the Performing Arts to pay tribute to Dan Fogelberg and raise awareness for prostate cancer. Dan died in 2007 of prostate cancer.

Joe Ed Coffman was influenced by Dan’s music and wanted to do something in his honor; and so the Friends of Fogelberg was formed. The first tribute concert was 2008, and last night brought together 20 local musicians to the stage for the 2010 Dan Fogelberg Tribute in memory of Jim Holston. On June 18, 2009, eight months after the 2008 concert, Jim died of prostate cancer at age 65.

The crowds last night were excited and responsive, and the band played on with a well organized set of Dan Fogelberg songs. With 20 musicians on the stage, they traded off harmonies, spotlights, and lead guitar solos to a crowd that ate it up. This concert brought so much talent to the stage as volunteers, giving of their time and love of Dan Fogelberg, it showed in their presence.

Dr. Richard Kibbey, Holston’s urologist and himself a prostate cancer survivor, hosted this year’s event. He spoke of the research and progression of testing prostate cancer, and how important it is to see your doctor. Dr. Kibbey also joined in on the microphone and sang with the gang to a rousing applause.

Friends of Fogelberg Musicians and bands: Anderson, Flesher & Key, Mike Fuller, Kim Loe, Bob Hopkins, The Soulbreakers, Maggie Scales, Joe Ed Coffman, Charlie Roberson, Madison Jackson, James Davis, Insufficient Funds

The final tally of funds raised for the Harrington Cancer Center are still being compiled. Safe to say, the Friends of Fogelberg out did  themselves from 2008.

Death enhanced Holston’s life

By Jon Mark Beilue

In Memory of Jim Holston

Column

Jim Holston

Someone should wear some Christmas musical socks Thursday night at the “Friends of Fogelberg” concert to benefit prostate cancer. Then at the most inopportune time, have them play “Jingle Bells.”

Jim Holston would have liked that. He would laugh out loud. In fact, it happened to him – at a funeral around Christmas one year.

“I think it was during prayer time, but he accidentally hit his foot and his sock started playing ‘Jingle Bells,’” said friend Pam Webb. “Well, he looked around like, ‘Oh, please, who did that?’ Jim relaxed, and dad gum if he didn’t do it again. So typical. He never had lemons, only lemonade.”

The last time – and first time – “Friends of Fogelberg” was at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts in October 2008, Holston was the master of ceremonies. (more…)

Andersen, Flesher and Key sing “Once Upon a Time”

Anderson, Flesher, & Key is Amarillo’s premier party band. With the rock-solid drums from Drexel Ammons, they are still performing their unique blend of acoustic instruments and three part vocal harmonies. In 1980, Jackie Anderson and Bob Flesher were playing folk music for small local clubs and ski resorts in Taos, Angel Fire, and Red River. In 1981, they were joined by Woody Key for a one night performance. With no time to think of a catchy name, they were billed simply using their surnames. That one magic evening jelled into AFK and a musical friendship that has endured ever since.

By the end of 1982, Lynn Williams joined the group. They soon recorded Café Video, a PBS television special with all original music. In May of 1984, they released their first studio album entitled “Right on the Edge”. The album received rave reviews and is still traded by collectors today.

With Lynn’s move to Nashville in 1985, the band brought on a whole new concept for drums. The new drummer was in a box filled with e-prom chips and programmed by computer whiz Woody Key. The group would spend hours rehearsing with the machine until the music was tight as possible. The years between 84’ and 89’ were spent playing five to six nights a week in Amarillo, Dallas, Nashville, Lubbock, Midland, Taos, and South Padre Island. During that time their sound transformed from a country-rock band to a hard rockin’ dance group that played all the hits of the 80’s that dominated the air waves. In the late 80’s they introduced an array of keyboards and guitar synthesizers. With skin tight vocals, it was the largest three piece band you could find.
