Maggie Scales-Peacock – Instrumental in Friends of Fogelberg

Maggie Scales-Peacock plays violin, keyboard, drums, mandolin, rhythm guitar and sings. Maggie comes from quite a musical family. Her dad, Carlton Scales owned and played with his own big band at the Aviatrix Ballroom. The club on old route 66, was an Amarillo hotspot in the 30’s, thru 50’s. Maggie’s mom  sang with the big band. Her 4 other siblings are also professional musicians. Maggie has played 32 years with the Amarillo Symphony. For a few seasons, Maggie and 3 of her siblings were all members of our Symphony at the same time! (The other sibling was on the road playing music!) Maggie has also played over 20 years for the Amarillo Little Theatre productions. She has been involved with “TEXAS” as a musician for 9 years. Maggie is in her 14th year as fiddler, keyboardist, & vocalist with the Panhandle’s favorite dance band, “Young Country”.

Maggie Scales-Peacock started locally with the “Clyde Logg” band. She traveled with RCA recording artist “Dottsy”. Maggie has also played with Porter Wagoner, Bobby Bare, Ray Price, Hank Williams Jr.’s band, the Moody Blues, Bob Hope, The Transiberian Orchestra & others. She has played on numerous albums and commercials. Maggie is a new member of the West Texas Music Hall of Fame receiving a ‘Special Recognition and Achievement Award” for 2008.

Maggie Scales-Peacock  is instrumental in organizing and charting the music of the string ensemble for the Friends of Fogelberg III Concert. Thank you for all your hard work.

Soulbreakers in Tribute for Dan

The Soulbreakers will be performing at the Friends of Fogelberg III Tribute Concert at the Globe News Center for the Performing Arts in Amarillo Texas. July 26, 2012.  More info.

Steve Hathaway – Guitar

Woody Key – Guitar & Vocals

Scott Nall – Drums

Robert Workman – Bass & Vocals

The Soulbreakers, a rhythm & blues band from Amarillo, have performed over 500 shows since they began back in March of 1996.  Collectively they have over 125 years’ musical experience, and Soulbreakers members have performed on shows with many of the greats of the music industry including ZZ Top, Joe Cocker, Canned Heat, Huey Lewis & The News, Jonny Lang, Ian Moore, The Ventures, and Muddy Waters.  Their CD release “Black & White Blues” features original material as well as some popular standards.

For Friends of Fogelberg III, the band will be performing 2 re-tooled Dan songs, “Beyond the Edge” and “Road Beneath My Wheels.”  Woody:  “Dan could be quite the blues man, and we took ‘Road Beneath My Wheels,’ which was a solo performance that he did on ‘Greetings from the West,’ and cranked it up a notch.  Steve plays some of his usual low-down, gritty guitar on this; Steve’s got the greatest tone, and his playing is just ‘dignified,’ that’s the best description I can give it.  Robert is an awesome bass player, he just nails the bottom end, makes it look so easy.  Scott Nall is his one-of-a-kind mix of steady restraint coupled with the occasional ‘who knows what’s going to happen,’ which always raises the temperature a few degrees wherever we’re playing.  I get to sing and play some slide along with this formidable bunch, and we are fortunate to also feature the playing of our friends Ray Higgs on harmonica, and Bob Hopkins on piano and organ.  A good time will be had by all.”

Friends of Fogelberg Concert 2010,  August 19th, raised just shy of $30,000 for Prostate Cancer Awareness & Early Detection and Treatment. These proceeds also went to the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center in Amarillo.

Raised Awareness. Paid Tribute.

Last night, many gathered at the Globe News Center for the Performing Arts to pay tribute to Dan Fogelberg and raise awareness for prostate cancer. Dan died in 2007 of prostate cancer.

Joe Ed Coffman was influenced by Dan’s music and wanted to do something in his honor; and so the Friends of Fogelberg was formed. The first tribute concert was 2008, and last night brought together 20 local musicians to the stage for the 2010 Dan Fogelberg Tribute in memory of Jim Holston. On June 18, 2009, eight months after the 2008 concert, Jim died of prostate cancer at age 65.

The crowds last night were excited and responsive, and the band played on with a well organized set of Dan Fogelberg songs. With 20 musicians on the stage, they traded off harmonies, spotlights, and lead guitar solos to a crowd that ate it up. This concert brought so much talent to the stage as volunteers, giving of their time and love of Dan Fogelberg, it showed in their presence.

Dr. Richard Kibbey, Holston’s urologist and himself a prostate cancer survivor, hosted this year’s event. He spoke of the research and progression of testing prostate cancer, and how important it is to see your doctor. Dr. Kibbey also joined in on the microphone and sang with the gang to a rousing applause.

Friends of Fogelberg Musicians and bands: Anderson, Flesher & Key, Mike Fuller, Kim Loe, Bob Hopkins, The Soulbreakers, Maggie Scales, Joe Ed Coffman, Charlie Roberson, Madison Jackson, James Davis, Insufficient Funds

The final tally of funds raised for the Harrington Cancer Center are still being compiled. Safe to say, the Friends of Fogelberg out did  themselves from 2008.
