The Friends of Fogelberg III Concert held at the Globe News Center for the Performing Arts on July 26, 2012 raised $30,000 to fight prostate cancer with the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center.

After beloved singer-songwriter, Dan Fogelberg, died in 2007 of prostate cancer, local musicians banded together to form Friends of Fogelberg, performing all Fogelberg music at Bi-Annual concerts. The concerts are dedicated to continuing “Dan’s Quest” to defeat prostate cancer.

As Dan said, “Early detection” is key to beating this deadly men’s disease.

In keeping with “Dan’s Quest” – Friends of Fogelberg and the Harrington Cancer Center will host a
FREE PSA Blood Test Screening,
along with a FREE Breakfast and FREE Gas Card

Saturday, September 22nd

8:00am to Noon

Friends of Fogelberg encourages people to ‘Think Blue, Too’

Joe Ed Coffman was 49 in 2007, the year Dan Fogelberg, one of his musical inspirations, died of prostate cancer. Coffman was entering the prime age that prostate cancer strikes.
He knew a lot about Fogelberg’s music, but not so much about what ended his life at age 56.

“I didn’t even know what a prostate was,” Coffman said. “I never even heard of it. I didn’t know. I think a lot of men are just ignorant to it.”

Since then, Coffman has carried the torch locally for prostate cancer awareness and fundraising. He started Friends of Fogelberg, a grassroots movement that legally became a second-party fundraiser.

Its primary event is a benefit concert where, beginning in 2008, local musicians came together every other year for a message and music. The last two concerts, including one in July, helped raise nearly $30,000 apiece for the Don & Sybil Harrington Cancer Center for screenings for indigent and uninsured men. Free screenings for any men are scheduled for Sept. 22.

Quest for blue paper raises prostate cancer awareness

By JON MARK BEILUE

“Thank you for increasing awareness of breast cancer with Saturday’s pink paper. Next September — we missed this past month’s prostate awareness month — perhaps you could increase awareness of prostate cancer by printing the paper in a light blue hue, the national symbol for prostate cancer.”

— Gerald H. Holman, Amarillo

Dr. Gerald Holman rested in bed at his Wolflin house last week. Three pillows propped up his head. If he needed Audrey, his wife of nearly 59 years, he lightly tapped the wall behind him.

Spread out on the king-sized bed were an iPhone, an iPad and medications in a small zipped bag. A glass of water was at his side, and he frequently took a long draw from it.

“Thanks for coming,” he said. “Sorry I can’t get up.”

His 83-year-old body, underneath light gold pajamas, was thin and frail. But his voice was strong, his mind alert and his focus was on others, not himself.

“I’ll be dead in a month,” he said almost matter-of-factly. “At the most, three months.”

Holman said he had some goals he likely won’t make. He wants to see who wins the November presidential election. He and Audrey wanted to return to their beloved Sanibel Island in Florida, but he’s too weak for that. He dearly wants to make it to Sept. 25, his 59th wedding anniversary.

Without Audrey, he said, he wouldn’t have made it this far.

But there was a more immediate goal.

“It’s only a few days away,” he said, “and I think I’ll make that.”

It was to see the Amarillo Globe-News printed on light blue paper. Don’t adjust your newspaper. It’s intentional.

Soulbreakers in Tribute for Dan

The Soulbreakers will be performing at the Friends of Fogelberg III Tribute Concert at the Globe News Center for the Performing Arts in Amarillo Texas. July 26, 2012.  More info.

Steve Hathaway – Guitar

Woody Key – Guitar & Vocals

Scott Nall – Drums

Robert Workman – Bass & Vocals

The Soulbreakers, a rhythm & blues band from Amarillo, have performed over 500 shows since they began back in March of 1996.  Collectively they have over 125 years’ musical experience, and Soulbreakers members have performed on shows with many of the greats of the music industry including ZZ Top, Joe Cocker, Canned Heat, Huey Lewis & The News, Jonny Lang, Ian Moore, The Ventures, and Muddy Waters.  Their CD release “Black & White Blues” features original material as well as some popular standards.

For Friends of Fogelberg III, the band will be performing 2 re-tooled Dan songs, “Beyond the Edge” and “Road Beneath My Wheels.”  Woody:  “Dan could be quite the blues man, and we took ‘Road Beneath My Wheels,’ which was a solo performance that he did on ‘Greetings from the West,’ and cranked it up a notch.  Steve plays some of his usual low-down, gritty guitar on this; Steve’s got the greatest tone, and his playing is just ‘dignified,’ that’s the best description I can give it.  Robert is an awesome bass player, he just nails the bottom end, makes it look so easy.  Scott Nall is his one-of-a-kind mix of steady restraint coupled with the occasional ‘who knows what’s going to happen,’ which always raises the temperature a few degrees wherever we’re playing.  I get to sing and play some slide along with this formidable bunch, and we are fortunate to also feature the playing of our friends Ray Higgs on harmonica, and Bob Hopkins on piano and organ.  A good time will be had by all.”

Golfing raises money for prostate cancer

The Amarillo based organization “Friends of Fogelberg” held its 1st Annual Golf Scramble on October 9, 2010 at Comanche Trail Golf Complex. Along with the Great Palo Duro Prostate Putting Relay on October 3, the group raised $2,500, benefitting the Harrington Cancer Center to battle prostate cancer. Legendary singer songwriter, Dan Fogelberg, died of prostate cancer in December 2007 at age 56 inspiring the organization of the group, Friends of Fogelberg. The group’s goals are to raise awareness and to urge men that early screening could save their lives. Organizers believe that the issue of prostate cancer’s time has come and it should be treated with the same urgency and attention that breast cancer receives. The Susan G. Komen Foundation is a great model for Friends of Fogelberg They have done wonderful work at Komen. They “Think Pink.” At Friends of Fogelberg, we “DO BLUE.”

Raised Awareness. Paid Tribute.

Last night, many gathered at the Globe News Center for the Performing Arts to pay tribute to Dan Fogelberg and raise awareness for prostate cancer. Dan died in 2007 of prostate cancer.

Joe Ed Coffman was influenced by Dan’s music and wanted to do something in his honor; and so the Friends of Fogelberg was formed. The first tribute concert was 2008, and last night brought together 20 local musicians to the stage for the 2010 Dan Fogelberg Tribute in memory of Jim Holston. On June 18, 2009, eight months after the 2008 concert, Jim died of prostate cancer at age 65.

The crowds last night were excited and responsive, and the band played on with a well organized set of Dan Fogelberg songs. With 20 musicians on the stage, they traded off harmonies, spotlights, and lead guitar solos to a crowd that ate it up. This concert brought so much talent to the stage as volunteers, giving of their time and love of Dan Fogelberg, it showed in their presence.

Dr. Richard Kibbey, Holston’s urologist and himself a prostate cancer survivor, hosted this year’s event. He spoke of the research and progression of testing prostate cancer, and how important it is to see your doctor. Dr. Kibbey also joined in on the microphone and sang with the gang to a rousing applause.

Friends of Fogelberg Musicians and bands: Anderson, Flesher & Key, Mike Fuller, Kim Loe, Bob Hopkins, The Soulbreakers, Maggie Scales, Joe Ed Coffman, Charlie Roberson, Madison Jackson, James Davis, Insufficient Funds

The final tally of funds raised for the Harrington Cancer Center are still being compiled. Safe to say, the Friends of Fogelberg out did  themselves from 2008.
